Prayer can provide peace - not to mention actual answers. I think it gives the brain space, free of worry, so that the mind can do what it was designed to do...think.
I just discovered this prayer site called Our Prayer.
The site lets you type in a prayer request or trouble you're having, and then a volunteer prays for the request.
I used it this weekend. I got into a pretty bad fear state and was having trouble extricating myself from it. That's when I found this site. (I don't believe in coincidences, by the way...and, yes, even with the miracles I've seen I still run into fear.)
I typed in my troubles, thanked them for the prayer...and by the next morning, the troubles had not gone away, but my fear had - and it hasn't come back.
We were not meant to live in fear.
I've been familiar with Dr. Peale's work for years. When I graduated from NC State, my cousin sent me the book, The Power of Positive Thinking , and a plaque with some writings of Emerson.
My undergraduate degree is in English and Emerson was, and still is, a favorite. At the time, I had never heard of Dr. Peale. I've grown to love him and his works, too. That book marked the beginning of my study into the power of the mind, which I still joyfully study today.
The prayer site also has all kinds of other resources on it. I was thrilled to discover that there are videos of Dr. Peale's sermons on faith, worry, grief, anxiety and other troubles.
